Housing Table 1

  • Not risk community $$$
  • Empty buildings – too many
  • What are the Needs?
    • Short term rentals (like motels) are essential to support and house the construction workers – need housing while here
    • Potential house/acreage @10K North Fork road to create a free community
    • Billeting – for events, to support them

Questions:

  • What is the City’s role in supporting affordable housing?
  • Should the city be involved or in charge?
  • 20 acres with 5 or 6 developments (coal shute to A &W) owned by CPR
  • Land cost $400,000
  • City controls zoning thus controls building development
  • Maybe city leases the land is a better idea for long term planning
  • Is affordable the appropriate nomenclature?
  • Trails are a vital part of our community development
  • GF lives and dies on summer events – billeting is one housing option – but would need organization
  • Municipal government to accept their role
  • Need zero barriers (@no cost) to obtain housing… for those with hopelessness, requires a support system to be sustainable
  • The cost saving/benefits to the community should be self-evident!!!

Belonging – Table 2

  • Newcomer article weekly in Gazette (template/interview)
  • Explore “newbie” potluck at City Park
  • Monthly newcomers meeting
  • Cultural inclusion – eventual weekend
  • Local community ambassador program restructured (City Hall) – Especially youth ambassadors – find out what would motivate them
  • Volunteer grandparents – integrate generations
  • Ways to find common ground with new immigrants
  • Follow through – very important intentions verbalized
  • Consider language used to describe relationships (eg change not for profit to public benefit; “neighbor” can be anyone)
  • Provide room for new ideas conversations – requires skilled facilitation
  • Feelings that safety is important – respect appreciated, involved, and enhances belonging – must be two ways
  • How to enhance youth’s sense of belonging
  • Creating space where youth can be themselves; just hang out
  • Volunteering – claim hours as tax write off (put in total hours)

Food Security – Table 3

  • Farmers Market – provide food to KVFC?

  • Incentives for local producers and distributors
  • Make a local supply available for local commercial facilities ie hospitals, restaurants, care facilities

Garbage, Compost & Recycling – Table 4

    • leads to more going into garbage
    • Harder to recycle if you can’t get to the dump

    • Need to buffer against floods & droughts by storing excess water
    • Fire protection – would not have capacity in event of a forest fire

    • Lawns – pros and cons of watering – doesn’t need so much
    • Improve and protect riparian areas
    • Buffer zone between agriculture land and river – should not have cattle in river!! RDKB and Province of BC
